Importing MetaTrader 5 history
Published Aug 11, 2026
The importer accepts the report files MetaTrader 5 produces natively. You never give BetterTradeJourney your broker credentials — you hand it a file you exported yourself.
Supported formats
HTML and XLSX reports exported from the History tab of the MetaTrader 5 Toolbox. Both the standard and detailed layouts are parsed. The maximum upload size is set by the platform administrator and defaults to 10 MB, which is comfortably more than a multi-year statement needs.
What gets imported
For every closed position: ticket ID, symbol, direction, volume in lots, open and close price, open and close time, commission, swap, and stop loss and take profit where the report records them. Realised P&L is taken from the statement rather than recalculated, so it matches your broker exactly.
Duplicate protection
Trades are matched on the broker's ticket ID. Re-importing a statement that overlaps one you have already uploaded updates the existing trades instead of duplicating them, so exporting a fresh report each week is safe and requires no cleanup.
Grouping scaled entries
A position built in three parts arrives as three tickets. Group them and the journal treats them as the single decision they were — the group carries one strategy, one set of confluence answers and one combined result, rather than three that distort your win rate.
When an import fails
The most common cause is a report exported with the period filter still set to Today, which produces a file with headers and no rows. Widen the period in MetaTrader 5 and export again. If a file genuinely fails to parse, the error is recorded with the reason and support can see it.
